California Institute of Technology Displaces Harvard As Top Institution: World and Regional Rankings

INTRODUCTION

There is no doubt; ranking of higher educational institutions involves so much criteria and data. Usually, it is subjective and generalized. Ranking never has scientific precision. Colleges evolve, in strengths and weaknesses, in aspects like qualities of Instructors, availability and utilization of research funds, and upgrading. Colleges also differ in embracing change: many are slow at revolutionizing their curricular, and others easily and rapidly embrace innovation. This year, I perused some of the rankings of the world universities. Due to the newsflash by Forbes magazine, that California Institute of Technology has been ranked as the top research university in the world. Despite the distractions and distortions, California still remains a flagship state. There is occasional, ‘’Eastern -Western Bi-polar’’ rivalry in America as a result of Caltech’s displacement of Harvard University. Portraying the arrogance of Californians During the wedding of my classmate, I was astonished at her brother, a brilliant Caltech graduate who visited while we were at Baylor University. When I left Waco for Los Angeles, Professor Merle W. Alexander, Director of the Department of Environmental Studies, told me that he routinely visited the Jet Propulsion Laboratory every year. Professor Alexander, a top national atmospheric Physicist, was to teach at Baylor University. He played the French Horn, as a member of the Waco Symphony Orchestra, being degree qualified musically. Before knowing Steve Jobs, Baylor University, had introduced me to the computer world through massive network of Apple Macintosh computers. The ‘’Times Top Institutional’’ ranking intrigued me. Ranking was a collaborative efforts of Thomas Reuters agency’s data, supported by expert information from more than fifty leading professionals from fifteen nations continents involved. ‘’Times Top Institutional’’ ranking regards itself as reputational in performance comparison. The Institutions were ranked on regional and universal basis. Some of the parameters for the rankings, include, viz; volume and reputation of the researching, citations generated, innovation, the international outlook of the institutions as well as the nature of the teaching and learning environment.
